HOSTAL PROJECT FOR DISPLACED (TSUNAMI) AND ROMOTE (COUNTRY) SCHOOLCHILDREN (GIRLS) AT TANGALLE.

Tangalle is a small town, down south of Sri Lanka with the most beautiful beaches and landscapes in the world. The people second to non with their hospitality and charming smile on each once face. When ever helps needed, they never hesitate offering them without considering the color, nation or the level of the person.

Main income of the majority here is fishing. Also the tourism brings the good some of income to the people who live along the coastal line. But it is considered that the income is less than 30$ a month for more than 75% of the families. So in general they had a tuff living. But unfortunately the situation turned from bad to worst as the unexpected Tsunami brought the misfortune to most people in Sri Lanka and specially the Tangalle area, where the fishing and tourism were the basic income generated activities.

At present, even after 12 months completion to Tsunami, the situation is still bad in many families. Among them the children are the most affected and suffered. As Tangalle has become the centre of education for the whole area, most students from remote villages used to come and accommodate in Tangalle for their advance education. Some times these children are from poor farming lands from the country, where they have to travel 60 to 80 km daily to attend a better school. Even after school, they used to attend private tuition classes as the competition is very high to attend university. Sometimes these children have to wake up too early in the morning (3.00 to 4.00 am) and travel several hours to attend school and come home very late and tired. These families do not have enough money to find boarding places for their children near school.

In tangalle itself, most of the tsunami affected families are still living in wooden houses and one of these group of houses contain more than 20 to 30 houses attached to each other. Here the sanitary facilities are very low and only two or three toilets and bathing areas to be shared among them. As it is well known that Sri lanka is a country with culture, which does not allow female to bath in open area. They are very shy of changing clothes even in front of family members. So here the situation becomes really tuff for young schooling girls to get ready for the school with this rush in time. Even they do not find a good background for there educations after school as the most adults here are used to get local alcohol and starts to shout and fight with bad words all the evening. They never hesitate to put there music in full volume for the whole day.

As we understood the precise gift for children is to help them with there education, planned this project to help them by providing better accommodation and background for their further education. We mainly focus on girls as they are the mostly desperate among all and need more care and protection.
